Saju vs. BaZi vs. Western Astrology: What’s the Difference?

Five glowing symbols of wood, fire, earth, metal and water in a circle under the night sky

Short answer: Saju and BaZi are the same system, the Four Pillars of Destiny, under its Korean and Chinese names. Western astrology is a different system: it reads the positions of the planets at your birth, while Saju reads the time of your birth (year, month, day and hour) through the five elements. Many people use both side by side.

Saju and BaZi: one system, two names

Saju (四柱) is Korean for “four pillars.” BaZi (八字) is Chinese for “eight characters,” because the four pillars contain eight characters in total: one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch in each. The rules came from the same classical texts. Korea has its own long tradition of reading them, and Saju is still part of everyday life there, from new-year readings to gunghap, compatibility checks before a wedding.

Your “sign” is different in each

In Western astrology most people know their Sun sign. In the Chinese zodiac they know their year animal. In Saju, the center of the chart is neither: it is your Day Master, the element of the day you were born, such as Yang Wood (a tall tree) or Yin Water (rain). Two friends born in the same year share an animal but almost never share a Day Master. See What Is My Saju Element? for all ten.

Where Saju is strongest

  • Timing. Saju splits life into 10-year luck cycles and reads each year and month against them. That is why people ask it “when” questions: when to move, when love comes.
  • Balance. The five elements show what your chart has too much or too little of, and what tends to support you.
  • Compatibility. Two charts can be compared element by element (see Are We Compatible?).

Frequently asked questions

Do Saju and Western astrology contradict each other?

Not really. They use different languages. Many people find that the themes overlap, and enjoy seeing themselves from two angles.

Is Korean Saju different from Chinese BaZi in practice?

The calculation is the same. Styles of interpretation differ between readers more than between countries. Korean readers often focus on love, marriage timing and compatibility.

Can I get a Saju reading if I live outside Korea?

Yes. A reader converts your birth date and time from your local time zone. You only need your date, city and, if you know it, your time of birth.

Saju is a traditional East Asian system of interpretation. It has not been scientifically proven, and it is offered here for entertainment and self-reflection, not as professional or relationship advice.
